8/5/25

Around the second year of living in Orlando, I began searching for ways to connect with various groups related to my interests. I would take dance classes, visit small business meetups, and join gatherings for digital creatives.

Every time I went to one of these classes or meetups, I would say a quick prayer as I drove: 'Lord, have your way.'

I had several expectations when attending these public events. Like, maybe I’ll meet a friend or make a new business connection. However, in the back of my mind, I always prayed that I’d meet more “friends in the faith”.

So with every event, I’d go with intention. To find friends, you must be a friend. To reap, you must sow.

These events weren’t without a bit of apprehension. Every time I’d go, I would feel hesitation about going alone and being among strangers. Still, as I prayed, I centered on the Holy Spirit, trusting he would guide my steps, my thoughts, and my words.

While at a crowded networking event, I had a quick thought to say hello to a girl in the back of the room who arrived later than everyone else. I smiled and waved.

Still, before I left, I had the thought to strike up an intentional conversation with her.

We talked about art, post-graduation plans, and the job search. She told me that she doesn’t usually attend events like these, but she’d be graduating soon and needed to muster the courage to put herself out there to network. As we continued talking, I discovered that she was a believer and was seeking to form more friendships with people of faith. I told her I was also looking for faith community, too.

From then on, we’ve had the chance to discuss our faith journey, share stories, and encourage one another in prayer. She’s the first friend I’ve made since moving here that I can say God made happen. I’m grateful that the Holy Spirit brought us together.

I wonder if we would’ve been friends had we not had the courage to attend that meeting and connect.

I found church with a new friend from a networking event.

Embodying the church for me meant listening to the subtle directions from the Holy Spirit to go, speak, and share my heart.
