8/5/25

We were out doing some yard work and planning to go for an evening swim when a neighbor texted back after casually checking in on her with a text that morning.

This is our neighbor that we’ve gotten to know little by little on our evening walks. We found out through conversation that she’s also a believer. We’d often walk by her house, stopping to talk about the goodness of God.

But, back to the day she texted me… I felt conflicted because it interrupted my evening plans. But she admitted she had recently fallen, was feeling discouraged, and could really use some prayer, and was willing to walk over to do that.

When I read that text I felt a sense of hurry and excitement, because these are the kinds of things I prayed would happen in my neighborhood – spontaneous moments for deeper connection.

So I quickly wrapped up my swimming time, just in time to receive my neighbor at the door before dinner. I welcomed her in with some tea at the kitchen table and asked, ‘how are you feeling after your fall?”

I soon realized, as we talked about her injury, that there was something deeper God had for her beyond a speedy recovery. She pushed back tears as she began to open up about a desire for a revival in her heart. I remember how God used to use me, she said.

It was a sweet moment that came about from a simple text to check on her. It was a chance to practice listening prayer, to ask God for physical healing, but also to thank Him for giving her a more profound desire to become revived with His Holy Spirit.

What impressed me about our interaction was that she mentioned she wanted to get back to the times when she listened to God for others. She recounted how alive she felt during those times, hearing God and praying for people as He instructed. God met us there during that evening.

Through that interaction, God is teaching me that He is faithful to meet us where we are and to love others intentionally. Even though my neighbor was a believer, she still needed encouragement and prayer.
